Giorgio Armani
Giorgio Armani was born in Italy on 11 July 1934, and formed his hugely successful company with his partner Sergio Galeotti 40 years later in 1974. The Armani range started as a menswear label, but expanded to include womenswear and childrenswear. It is surprising to learn that Armani originally trained in medicine, and came to designing after working in a department store after his stint in national service in the later 50s.
Armani’s clothes are renowned for their clean, tailored lines. This was evident in the clothes produced for Hollywood stars, most notably Richard Gere in his title role of American Gigolo in 1980, which gave Armani international recognition and secured his future as a leading global brand.
